SCHUBERT Sonata Arpeggione. Trascrizione per chitarra e pianoforte. Suvini Zerboni

La Sonata per arpeggione e pianoforte, una delle opere più amate dello Schubert camerista, nasce in circostanze oggi difficili da immaginare: siamo infatti di fronte a un meraviglioso “spot pubblicitario” per promuovere un nuovo strumento inventato da Johann Georg Stauffer, su commissione del chitarrista Vincenz Schuster. L’arpeggione – curioso ibrido tra chitarra e violoncello – ebbe vita breve, ma la sonata che Schubert aveva composto per metterne in luce le peculiarità ha avuto la capacità di sopravvivergli, restando in repertorio fino ai giorni nostri.

Il violoncello, strumento che ha reso celebre questa sonata, ha in comune con l’arpeggione il fatto di essere suonato con l’arco. Tuttavia anche la chitarra ha numerosi punti di contatto con la creazione di Stauffer: il numero delle corde, il manico tastato e una voce più propensa ad alludere dolcemente che ad affermare con decisione. Lo scopo della presente pubblicazione è quindi proporre, a chi la vorrà percorrere, una nuova strada per muoversi sulle tracce dell’arpeggione.

La parte solistica della sonata è qui presentata in una versione chitarristica, con pochissime modifiche al testo schubertiano e una diteggiatura testata su strumenti costruiti da Johann Georg Stauffer; lo stesso Schubert possedeva una chitarra del grande liutaio viennese: forse le prime note dell’Arpeggione hanno preso vita, suonate direttamente dall’autore, proprio sulle sue corde.

The Sonata for arpeggione and piano, one of Schubert’s best-loved chamber works, was born in circumstances that are difficult to imagine today: we are, in fact, dealing with a splendid “publicity stunt” to promote a new instrument invented by Johann Georg Stauffer, commissioned by the guitarist Vincenz Schuster. The arpeggione – a curious cross between a guitar and a cello – was short-lived, but the sonata that Schubert composed to highlight its peculiarities has survived, remaining in the repertoire to this day.

The cello, the instrument that made this sonata famous, shares with the arpeggione the fact that it is played with a bow. However, the guitar also has many points of contact with Stauffer’s creation: the number of strings, the fretted neck and a voice more inclined to gently allude than to assert itself decisively. The aim of this publication is therefore to propose, to those wishing to pursue it, a new path for retracing the steps of the arpeggione.

The solo part of the sonata is presented here in a version for guitar, with very few changes to Schubert’s text and a fingering tested on instruments built by Johann Georg Stauffer; Schubert himself owned a guitar by the great Viennese luthier:  the first notes of the Arpeggione Sonata may well have come to life, played directly by the composer, on its very strings.
